Abstract
In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution, we turn to one of Lídia Jorge’s (2014) novels that thematizes and fictionalizes this historical moment: Os memoráveis. In 2004, Ana Maria Machado, a young Portuguese woman living in Washington, returned to her homeland to collect the accounts and memories of various agents of April 25, who were selected from a photograph taken at the Memories restaurant, a year after the revolution, in August 1975. This article analyses this novel in the light of the concepts of parody and irony coined by Linda Hutcheon (1991; 2000) to understand how Jorge’s fiction problematizes different perspectives on the past and how postmemory (Medeiros, 2020) operates in the claim of the generation that inherited April.
