Abstract
Within the most recent literary production, a place of special visibility belongs to O alegre canto da perdiz (2016), by the Mozambican Paulina Chiziane. This articulate and intense novel stages Mozambican history from colonial times to national independence – and it does so by narrating the troubled experiences of a four-generations Mozambican family. In this article I focus on the novel's representation of both gender and racial violence. I analyze how and what extent the constant practice of violence (physical, psychologic and epistemic) during the colonial regime affects the process of search and construction of both national and individual identity, for men as much as for women, and how the latter end up de-ontologizing both their own sexuality and motherhood.
