Abstract
This paper investigates the theme of exile in the novel Lillias Fraser (2001), by Hélia Correia, focusing on how exile influences the protagonist’s loss of identity and how she reclaims her subjectivity during her journey. The themes of identity and feminine subjectivity are analyzed according to Rosi Braidotti’s feminist theory of the female nomad, as presented in Nomadic Subjects (1994). The analysis suggests that Lillias Fraser undergoes several forms of exile and is forced to take up different identities to survive. By fleeing her home country, Lillias is subjected to exile as the loss of her homeland, needing to seek refuge in other countries. Since she can never return, her wandering never ceases. Finally, she becomes the nomadic woman proposed by Braidotti (1994), as her subjectivity can only be developed through her multiple identities in exile. Thus, her identity is not lost but is constantly in transformation.
